Should I be concerned if morning fasting blood glucose is elevated on keto?

Some people who start eating a low-carb, moderate protein, high-fat diet may notice their blood sugar is higher in the morning than the rest of the day. Don’t worry about it! This is completely normal and what is referred to as a glucose sparing effect. It is the biological mechanism for fulfilling all the glucose-dependent functions in the brain, heart, and other parts of the body.

When you shift your body over to using ketones as the primary fuel source, this may happen. But it’s 100% okay if it does. If you are concerned, run an A1c test and aim for a goal of 5.0 mmol/L.
